How to Cancel BetStop: The Official Early-Removal Process

BetStop is Australia’s National Self-Exclusion Register for licensed online and phone wagering providers. You cannot simply switch it off immediately after registering. However, current official guidance says you may apply to cancel a self-exclusion early after completing at least three months of exclusion.

The official process requires more than an online request. You must obtain professional support, complete a Commonwealth statutory declaration and submit a valid application. If the application is complete and valid, BetStop says removal happens after a seven-day period.

This guide explains that process. It does not provide ways to bypass self-exclusion or recommend gambling services outside the register.

What BetStop covers

BetStop blocks access to wagering providers licensed to offer online and phone betting in Australia. For a broader explanation of registration, coverage and complaints, see How Does BetStop Work?. While you are registered, covered providers should not:

  • let you open a wagering account;
  • let you place a bet;
  • send you direct marketing.

Providers should also close covered wagering accounts and refund account credit. BetStop does not cover in-person casinos or pokie venues, and it does not make illegally supplied online casino services lawful or safe.

Can you cancel BetStop early?

Yes, but only through the official process and only after at least three months of self-exclusion.

According to the BetStop FAQs, an early-cancellation application must include a Commonwealth statutory declaration confirming that you have seen a counsellor or general practitioner to discuss the decision. BetStop’s privacy policy also describes a counsellor, general practitioner or psychologist seen within the previous three months.

Submitting a request does not mean immediate removal. BetStop says that, if the application is valid and completed correctly, removal occurs after seven days. You may withdraw the application during that period if you change your mind.

Step-by-step: how to apply for early cancellation

1. Confirm that three months have passed

Check the start date and chosen length in your BetStop account. The official early-removal route is available only after the initial minimum three-month period has been completed.

If your nominated exclusion period is about to end, you may prefer to let it finish normally. BetStop says it will contact you before expiry, and removal occurs at the end of the chosen period unless you extend.

2. Speak with an appropriate professional

Arrange a genuine discussion about your gambling behaviour and the decision to end self-exclusion. The official materials refer to a counsellor, general practitioner or psychologist.

Use the conversation to consider:

  • what has changed since you registered;
  • whether gambling previously caused financial, health or relationship harm;
  • what limits and support would be in place;
  • what you would do if gambling became difficult to control again.

This is not a box-ticking exercise. The statutory declaration is a legal document, so the information in it must be true.

3. Complete the Commonwealth statutory declaration

Follow the instructions provided through your BetStop account or official support channel. The declaration must confirm the required professional discussion and be completed correctly.

Do not use a third-party “cancellation service”, altered document or false declaration. If you are unsure about the required form or witnessing process, contact BetStop directly instead of guessing.

4. Submit the application through an official channel

Sign in to your BetStop account or use the official BetStop enquiry route and select the option concerning cancellation of self-exclusion. Keep a copy of the submitted form and any confirmation.

BetStop’s contact page lists phone support on 1800 238 786, Monday to Friday from 9 am to 9 pm AEST/AEDT, excluding national public holidays. Check the current contact page before calling in case service details change.

5. Allow for the seven-day period

If the application is valid and correctly completed, BetStop says you will be removed after seven days. Its FAQ explains that removal occurs overnight after the last day of that period.

You can withdraw the application during the seven days. If you nominated a support person, official guidance says that person may be notified when you try to end self-exclusion early.

What happens when a fixed exclusion period ends?

BetStop says it will contact you before the end date and ask whether you want to extend. You can extend an exclusion at any time through your account.

If you do not extend, BetStop removes you from the register after the chosen period ends. You can register again later. The early-cancellation declaration process is different from simply reaching the scheduled end of a fixed exclusion.

What if your exclusion is for life?

The same official minimum-period rule still matters: BetStop’s FAQ says you may apply for early cancellation only after at least three months. Because a lifetime exclusion has no scheduled end date, use the account or official contact route to obtain the current instructions rather than relying on an unofficial form or old screenshot.

Before deciding to cancel

Consider keeping safeguards in place even if you qualify to apply:

  • a nominated support person;
  • gambling counselling;
  • transaction blocks or account limits offered by your bank;
  • a written spending plan;
  • reduced access to savings or credit;
  • blocking tools on devices.

If the urge to gamble feels urgent or difficult to control, use the support links on the BetStop support-tools page before submitting a cancellation request.

What BetStop cancellation does not do

Ending self-exclusion does not:

  • reopen old wagering accounts automatically;
  • guarantee that a provider will accept a new account;
  • remove other state, territory or venue-based exclusions;
  • make an unlicensed gambling service legal;
  • guarantee that gambling will be affordable or free from harm.

Each provider still has its own lawful account and identity checks. Our guide to checking whether a betting site is legal in Australia explains how to verify the provider rather than relying on a logo or marketing claim. Do not send identity documents to a site merely because it claims to be “outside BetStop”.

If a provider breached your exclusion

While you are registered, covered providers should not let you open an account, place a bet or receive direct marketing. If you believe a provider breached those rules, use the complaint route on the official BetStop contact page. Keep screenshots, messages, account details and dates.

Do not cancel your exclusion merely to resolve a complaint or obtain an account balance. BetStop says covered providers should close accounts and refund credit while exclusion remains active.

Summary

You may apply to cancel BetStop early only after at least three months. The official process requires a recent discussion with a counsellor or clinician, a correctly completed Commonwealth statutory declaration and a valid application. BetStop then applies a seven-day period before removal, during which the request can be withdrawn.

Use your BetStop account or official contact channels. Avoid bypass advice, unofficial cancellation services and false declarations. If your fixed exclusion is near its scheduled end, remember that normal expiry and early cancellation are separate processes.
